My work unpacks tensions between the historical and the autobiographical, and participates in the confluence of the two. With a focus on intersections of race, gender, and sexuality, I experiment with components of identity formation to realize how people and places become who and what we are.
Justin Allen is a writer and performer from Northern Virginia. He has written for Mosaic Literary Magazine, Lambda Literary, ARTS.BLACK, and the Leslie-Lohman Museum's journal The Archive, among others. His work has been recognized by the Vera List Center for Arts and Politics, and BD GRMMR, a zine he started with friends and collaborators Yulan Grant and Brandon Owens, is anthologized in Printed Matter's Queer Zines 2.
He has performed in dance artist niv Acosta's work DISCOTROPIC on such occasions as PS122's COIL 2016 Festival in New York City and Tanz im August in Berlin. He has performed at the New Museum, and read his work at the Whitney, Poetry Project, and Artists Space. In 2016 he presented at the International James Baldwin Conference at the American University of Paris.
He lives in New York City.
